About Biomass Energy
Biomass is a renewable energy resource derived from the carbonaceous waste of various
human and natural activities. It is derived from numerous sources, including the
by-products from the timber industry, agricultural crops, raw material from the
forest, major parts of household waste and wood.
Scientists are trying to explore the advantages of biomass energy as an alternative
energy source as it is renewable and free from net CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions,
and is abundantly available on earth in the form of agricultural residue, city garbage,
cattle dung, firewood, etc. Bio-energy, in the form of biogas, which is derived
from biomass, is expected to become one of the key energy resources for global sustainable

Rajasthan has immense potential in form of Juli-flora (Vilayati Babool), Mustard
husk, Rice husk and other agriculture residues for the biomass fuel. Biomass-based
Power Projects totaling to 113 MW have already been registered with RREC.
Biomass is another rich potential non-conventional source of energy. Power projects
based on biomass of total 46.3 MW capacities have been installed in the State and
another two projects based on biomass totaling to 15.5 MW are under implementation.
There is a large market in the industrial cluster of Rajasthan for various applications
like namkeen, khoya, steel re-rolling mills, and dyeing industry.

Kalpataru Energy Venture is the biomass division of Mumbai-based Kalpataru Power
Transmission Ltd. The Company has set up a 7.8 MW power plant in Padampur, Ganganagar
district in September 2003, manufacturing power using renewable resources such as
mustard crop residue and cotton sticks. The project has been in association with
Alwar Power Company Ltd, which is executing a 7.5-mw mustard crop residue based
biomass project (costing Rs 36 crore) in Alwar, Rajasthan, is one of the first projects
to be registered at UNFCCC for earning carbon credits. The company is now negotiating
